Regenerating neglected land
We’ve been hard at work on our new property making modifications to fit our needs and working on neglected soil. Many years ago there were horses here. While our beehives enjoy the clover that was planted for those horses, the land has become extremely compacted. Coupled with clay soil, to say growing here is a challenge is an understatement.
Techniques that we’re using to transform the land are aerating with a pull-behind plugger, broad-forking new beds, and growing cover crops to add organic matter and create channels for water drainage. As you may know, clay soil drains slowly. One good thing that it does do is hang on to nutrients. If we can get it to drain, we can grow in it.
There are some crops we wanted to grow that don’t typically do well in our soil type. We made 12 raised beds for cut flowers which include both annuals and perennials. Additionally, we started stone and sandy topsoil mounds for lavender plants. More about that in Farm Updates!
